Caroline Kennedy was the first contender in line for the vacant Senate seat in New York in place of Hilary Clinton. She announced on Thursday that she was withdrawing from consideration for personal reasons. She called governor David Patterson Wednesday and informed him about her decision. A person that talked to her says her decision is based on her concern for her uncle, Senator Edward Kennedy who is suffering from brain cancer. Her decision caught the governor off guard. Governor Patterson was going to announce his decision Friday or Saturday but it might take longer than that now. As of right now, Mr. Cuomo is now the first contender in line.
I think that the New York Times did a good job with explaining this article in depth. A lot of people have been talking about this issue and want to be informed about it. It gave the straight facts about Caroline Kennedy's decision and did a good job at explaining what exactly happened.

Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteYou do a pretty good job summarizing the article but you could have said more. For example, why is the Senate seat vacant? You mention Hilary Clinton, but not why she left, what she's doing now.
Why does the governor get to choose who fills this seat? (see the 17th amendment to the U.S. Const.)
You mention Mr. Cuomo in your summary, but don't explain to the reader who he is.
Make sure you provide a direct link to the article.
Good article choice. It illustrates a Constitutional mechanism at work today.
Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteI think Hilary left for the position of Secretary of State. However, I don't think Caroline Kennedy gave up the chance for the senate because of her uncle. I think there is more that the public doesn't know.
I think they gave her a hard time simple because of her namesake. The media said horrible things about her at times. I don't know her background, so I wouldn't know about her job experience or if she was ready for this job. I just wish the media wouldn't be so harsh just because of who she is. I wonder if just because she is a women they say she doesn't have enough experience just like the media portrayed with Obama. They said he didn't have the experience to be President, did they say that only because he was going to be the first Black President. Because they are different a white women and black man running for office they come up with something to try and sway votes? Just a thought.
